    Our Top Twenty- our Language Arts goals for 8th grade Humanities

     

    By the end of 8th grade, I will be able to meet the following standards at a proficient level.

    I regularly read books on my own.

    I can learn and use new words correctly, focusing on nuances, connotations and denotations.

    I can identify common prefixes, suffixes and root words.

    I can write simple sentences that are punctuated correctly.

    I can write compound sentences that are punctuated correctly.

    I can write complex sentences that are punctuated correctly.

    I understand and use verbals (gerunds, participles and infinitives) correctly.

    I can write a summary with author, title and a brief retelling of the central idea and key details.

    I can write a narrative that develops an event and characters with well chosen details.

    I can identify the author’s purpose and cite text evidence to support that.

    I can identify the central idea in a nonfiction piece and cite text evidence to support that.

    I can identify a theme and support my choice with text evidence.

    I understand what an inference is and can make logical inferences with text support.

    I can use and cite text evidence correctly in my writing.

    I understand how to paraphrase correctly.

    I understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

    I can write a multi paragraph paper where I compare and contrast two texts.

    I can write a multi paragraph argument.

    I can write with a formal tone using academic language.

    I can speak in front of a large group for a variety of reasons.
