School Board Information

The St. Helens School District Board of Directors is composed of five publicly elected community members who serve four-year at large terms. General board powers and duties include legislative or rule-making authority, judicial authority, and executive/administrative authority as delegated by the Legislature of the State of Oregon and outlined in board policy BBA.

School Board elections occur in May of odd numbered years. Community members interested in a school board position can obtain filing information from the Columbia County Elections Department in person at 230 Strand Street, St. Helens, Oregon.

Public Meeting Participation

The School Board encourages public participation in its meetings.  If you are a member of the public and wish to address the Board, you will be allowed to do so if the agenda has a public comment section designated.  A person wishing to provide public comment, if an opportunity is provided by the Board during a meeting open to the public, will sign in on the public comment sheet provided complete and submit the Intent to Speak card to the Board secretary prior to the Board meeting.   

Public comment will follow SHSD Board Policy: BDDH | Public Comments in Board Meetings.

 In-Person Public Comment (if on Meeting Agenda): 

  • Fill out the Intent to Speak Comment Card and submit it to the Board Secretary prior to the meeting’s Call-To-Order. Submissions after the meeting begins may be reserved for the next Board meeting.  
  • Please limit comments to approximately 3 minutes/individual – 5 minutes/group.
  • Please know that the Board is listening, but the Oregon public meeting law restricts what can be acted upon or discussed to those items properly noticed on the agenda.
  • Personnel concerns will not be discussed during citizen/public comments. Concerns can be submitted to the superintendent in writing for review and follow-up.

Note: A request to give public comment in-person or electronically for virtual attendees does not guarantee that time will be available.

Written Comment:  

  • Send email to sb502@sthelens.k12.or.us 72 hours before the start of the meeting and will be forwarded to the whole board but may not be read at the board meeting.
